Exciting news! The BC Government has announced the launch of the “Secondary Suite Incentive Program.” This program is designed to assist homeowners in creating affordable housing options within their communities. By participating in this program, homeowners can receive financial support of up to $40,000 to build a brand-new rental suite in their homes.
Starting from April 2024, applications for this program will be accepted. So, it’s time to get prepared and make sure you’re ready to apply when the time comes!
Through the Secondary Suite Incentive Program, eligible homeowners can receive up to 50% of the renovation costs, with a maximum limit of $40,000. The best part is that this financial assistance is provided as a forgivable loan. This means that if homeowners adhere to the program’s terms and conditions, they won’t have to repay the loan.
To qualify for loan forgiveness, the newly created secondary suite must be located on the homeowner’s property and rented out at below-market rates, as determined by BC Housing, for a minimum of five years.
Before applying to the program, it’s important to follow a few steps:
- First, determine your eligibility for the program bchousing.org/housing-assistance/secondary-suite
- Then, find and meet with a contractor who can provide you with a quote for the renovation work.
- Apply for and obtain the necessary building permit.
- Lastly, gather documents and apply online at bchousing.org/secondary-suite
With the launch of this program, now is the perfect time to begin the process. Take advantage of this opportunity to create affordable housing in your community and make a positive impact. Don’t miss out on the chance to receive financial support and contribute to the well-being of your fellow residents. Apply for the Secondary Suite Incentive Program today!
